Nothing unravels the story of concern from the Internet’s disarray of speculation and tears for the world from the trafficking of vulnerable people more than the story of compassion and injustice. We relate this to casework involving modern-day slavery. Modern-day slavery exists in the form of the criminal exploitation of individuals through fraud, coercion, and the use of force. For this reason, we associate the trafficking of persons with one of the most pressing criminal and social issues of our time.

The more important information, as far as social awareness and concern for people’s rights is concerned, is the type of information that requires proper systems, a legal framework, and a framework for sustained structural absence of trafficking systems from society as a whole. This is precisely the type of information that non-profits and other social gatekeepers work to create and bridge the gap between social awareness and social change.

Understanding the Reality of Human Trafficking

One of the most critical flaws in social awareness and concern for people’s rights is the tragic, criminal, social, and political essence of human trafficking. Human trafficking is almost always a criminal offense and one of the most tragic outcomes for people and communities. We must try to understand, in this age and time, the social and political outcomes and the social injustices and political systems that determine and promote a criminal and human existence for social actors.

The core essence of concern and the criminal offense is that almost always the social injustice is determined, criminal and social, and always in the most tragic outcomes of life. If we attempt to examine and study how the bureaucrats determine the social and political injustices and the criminal social and tragic outcomes as a social and political system, we will probably need to identify the core social systems of organized crime and the social and political systems as social actors.

The myriad political nuances and systems that such coercion and exploitation can cover often lead to a tragic, political, and social existence for the victims. It is for this reason that a social system of organized crime is the core social system that operates in a criminal and social, tragic existence of the people, and almost always, the organized bureaucrats, political actors, or social activist organizations.

Justice-oriented initiatives, the next step

While studying the trafficking field, one can identify the more strategized initiatives that move away from pure humanitarianism and place an emphasis on law, enforcement, training, and data.

In the course of my studies, the initiatives of the Human Trafficking Institute are the most organized and focused on results. Instead of only addressing the symptoms of trafficking, the HTI focuses on the systemic strengthening of the justice systems so that traffickers are investigated, prosecuted, and, most importantly, convicted.

This is successful because of the following:

• It provides long-lasting deterrence, and not only temporary relief.

One of the most apparent realities is how important enforcement is in terms of shifting the balance of power. If there are no consequences, victimization may continue to occur. When systems are stable and predictable, the balance is altered.

This is further support for the assertion that, rather than victims living in fear of the traffickers, the traffickers should be the ones living in fear of prosecution.

This does not come from awareness alone, but rather from action and the legal system.

Compassionate Justice

Compassion and accountability are two sides of the same coin, and the phenomenon of trafficking speaks to the need for justice on both sides of the divide. Most trafficking and justice initiatives, whether focused on accountability or compassion, lack the opposite component and thus ignore the perceived gap within the initiatives.

In this case, compassion means victims are recognized, helped, and validated. Part of accountability means that others’ victimization is prevented.

There is an element of maturity and sophistication to this approach. It is an emotional balance and an approach that focuses on the trafficking problem and the underlying issues.

The Global Perspective

There is a long way to travel in the global fight against trafficking. Despite the increase in advocacy, abuse continues because of poverty, conflict, and systemic discrimination.

Meaningful change comes from a multi-faceted approach that integrates:

2. Compassion
3. Justice

When these components are in harmony, change is possible.

The Last Word

The increase in global advocacy against child trafficking is a response to myriad misconceptions and assumptions. In its most basic form, the advocacy shows the importance of asking the right questions, and perhaps even more crucial, the value of a framework and a plan.

The anti-trafficking initiatives of today are a brilliant mix of compassion, empathy, and intelligence. We are no longer predominantly interested in the well-being of individuals, we are mostly interested in the well-being of the general populace.

That is the most important shift in modern anti-slavery work today, a shift from reactive to preventive.
